Hoping to meet a simple task of putting smiles on faces and Christmas gifts in the hands of more than 175 Carson City school children living in shelters, motels and with family members, organizers of the 9th annual Holiday with a Hero program will hold a fundraiser tonight, Saturday, at Jimmy G's Cigar Bar.
Holiday with a Hero provides children of Carson City with a positive experience with a uniformed officer and gives each student a Christmas they may not receive otherwise. The main event is set for Dec. 17 at Walmart. There, students will use gift cards to shop for items of need, such as clothing and shoes, and then pick a gift for fun.
The program is collaboration of efforts coordinated by Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Daniel Gonzales and involves the sheriff's office, the Carson City School District, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Corrections and the Uniformed First Responders from across the Carson Valley.
Students are chosen from the Carson City School District's “Students in Transition” program. These school children are without permanent fixed homes, usually living in shelters or motel rooms with their parents or other family members.
Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Daniel Gonzales said this year has been especially critical on local children. At least $20,000 is needed in this community event to meet the needs of the program and the children it is serving this year.
Saturday's fundraiser runs from 6 to 11 p.m. at Jimmy G's Cigar Bar, 301 North Carson Street. The fundraiser features a DJ, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, refreshments and a good time. All proceeds go to Holiday with a Hero.
Please see the attached flyer for information and how to help. Any monetary donation is greatly appreciated.
You can also donate at the Carson City Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser or go into the Bank of the West branch, 2976 N. Carson St., and ask for the Holidays with a Hero account.
