On June 19th, Lt. Jeff Melvin will be promoted to the grade of Captain at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. His promotion signals a milestone completion pursued by Sheriff Furlong since 2003 of having his top front line leadership positions in the department to successfully complete the FBI National Academy (FBINA), thus the promotion from Lieutenant to Captain. The esteem accomplishment of the academy is one of the most prestigious law enforcement alumni in the country.
Candidates for the FBINA can wait years for the opportunity to attend, then, once tentatively selected, they must complete a rigorous background and physical fitness evaluation before final selection. Captain Ken Sandage, Investigations Division, was first to graduate in September 2004, Captain Clay Wall, Patrol Operations, in September 2007, Captain Bob White, Detention Center Operations, in December 2009, and Captain Melvin, Administrative Operations, in April 2013.
The FBI National Academy is offered to top leaders and managers of state and local police, sheriffs’ departments, military police organizations, and federal law enforcement agencies. Participation is by invitation only through a nomination process. Participants are drawn from every state in the union, from U.S. territories, and from over 150 international partner nations.
For 10 classroom-hour weeks, four times a year, classes of some 250 officers take undergraduate and/or graduate college courses at the FBI’s Quantico, Virginia, campus in the areas of law, behavioral science, forensic science, understanding terrorism/terrorist mindsets, leadership development, communication, and health/fitness. Officers participate in a wide range of leadership and specialized training, and they share ideas, techniques, and experiences with each other, creating lifelong partnerships that span state and national lines.
Following graduation, each officer has the opportunity to join the FBI National Academy Associates, a dynamic organization of more than 15,000 law enforcement professionals who actively work to continue developing higher levels of competency, cooperation, and integrity across the law enforcement community.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Furlong are proud of the accomplishments of our front line leaders. Each of them represents the finest of our nation’s and Carson City’s Law Enforcement professionals.
