To provide escape from the frigid temperatures expected overnight and through Monday evening, the American Red Cross and Friends in Service Helping, otherwise known as FISH, have partnered with Carson City to open a warming shelter.
"The warming shelter will continue to provide a warm space for people who otherwise would be out in the cold," according to Red Cross CEO Clara Andriola. "FISH will open the center and be responsible to the city for running the operation. The Red Cross is supplying snacks, drinks, cots and blankets for residents and has shelter-trained workers staffing the warming shelter."
A homeless man died Thursday in south Carson City likely due to exposure to the cold, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. The warming center was developed due to the severity of the cold situation and the Carson City homeless population.
The warming shelter is in the Recreation Center in Fuji Park in Carson City. Fuji Park is on Old Clear Creek Road near Highway 395/South Carson Street, behind Bodines Casino. The warming shelter will be open each evening from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m., beginning tonight, December 6, through Tuesday morning, December 10.
