(Press release) On January 5, 2011 Carson City Sheriff’s Office received a national award for “Outstanding Citizen Participation” for the 2010 National Night Out special event hosted in August. National Night Out heightens crime and drug prevention awareness, community safety and, as in the case of Carson City, strengthens police-community partnerships. This award is the latest in the list of recognitions Carson City Sheriff’s Office received for the 2010 event including Congressional Awards from Congressman Dean Heller and a Letter of Commendation from Senator John Ensign.
National Night Out is the largest coordinated prevention effort in the United States. In his awards notification letter, Matt A. Peskin, National Project Coordinator wrote, “This year’s event involved 37.0 million people in 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide. We extend our congratulations for being selected among the nation’s best … Again we salute you and your community for a job well done!”
Sheriff Ken Furlong said, “along with all of the community wide support that we are thankful for, all of the public safety entities, service organizations and wellness partners, including Partnership Carson City, have been instrumental in this achievement. This years federal congressional representatives, Attorney General, and our friends at the Nevada Air National Guard, Nevada National Guard, as well as Recruiters from the U.S. Marines, Navy and Army made it particularly special. We have many opportunities in Carson, opportunities that improve the quality of life of both the community and individual. It is a great pleasure each August to see all of the efforts and enthusiasm of this town all coming together in our most beautiful Mills Park centered on prevention and education.”
Carson City Sheriff’s Office celebrates National Night Out as the culmination of the law enforcement initiatives to address crime and drugs by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, the partners, and our citizens. In 2010 there were over 110 exhibits involving representatives from law enforcement, military, public safety and community organizations. The event would not be possible without business sponsorships from: Target, Smith’s Food & Drug, the Down Town Business Association, Grocery Outlet, Cal Neva Towing, The Peddler’s Fare, Fun Jumpers, Economy Speed Press, Carson Now and Nevada Appeal.
Carson City is listed ninth in the nation in the community-size category which is the highest ranking we have ever received, and the only community award given in the state of Nevada (Las Vegas Metro placed in the All Star category).
Carson City Sheriff’s Office is looking forward to National Night Out in 2011.
