The Carson Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Carson City will be receiving a placement of 5th in the nation for communities of comparable size for its community wide crime prevention programs in 2014. This accomplishment was achieved even though a substantial rainfall prevented our August National Night Out in Mills Park. That cancelation was the first in 12 years.

To adjust, Deputy Lisa Davis implemented plan B and moved the celebration to the Boys and Girls Club about a week later. There, officers and military agencies met with the kids, participated in events, and distributed donations to the children and families.

Significant to this year’s award, Sheriff Ken Furlong highlights some of the activities that take place all year long by both the Sheriff’s Office and our civic partners. Without our year round activities, we likely would have missed the mark this year.

Key signature events include Cops N Kids Street Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and Cops N Kids Spaghetti Dinner hosted annually at the Fandango Casino, as well as events at the Boys and Girls Club, educational and DARE opportunities in the school district, the Children’s Museum, Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, activities sponsored by Partnership Carson City, and many more.

With over 180 partners this year, such as Grocery Outlet, American Family Insurance, Lakeside Properties, Target and many others, our successes would be limited.

Education is the key in Carson City. As a community embraces prevention and education, significant savings is made in both the short and long term. We strive for fewer incarcerations, family disruptions, and financial losses to businesses. To this end, the Sheriff notes that among the top reasons Deputies are dispatched in Carson City, is to respond to suspicious activities. This is a key indicator that we are all working together and working well in the same direction.

Sheriff Furlong would like to encourage everyone to never miss an opportunity with a child. Recognizing that these investments often take the longest to see true fruitions, there is substantial evidence locally that these relationships are paying off well.
