The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has been informed that this year’s National Night Out, held in Mills Park in August, has been awarded 5th place among communities nationwide of populations between 50,000 and 99,999.

Carson City placed just behind Maple Grove, MN, Terre Haute, IN, Brooklyn Park MN, and Suffolk, Va. This award is Carson City’s eleventh consecutive year of receiving national recognition, each year climbing higher on the placement list of top rated community events.

In Carson City, National Night Out presents all entities of public safety, fire and police alike, community organizations, non-profit agencies, local businesses, and youth organizations, as well as state and federal agencies in one spot at one time. This year’s theme was a “Reach Out” to those in crisis and need. An estimated 9,000 visitors descended on Mills Park to speak directly with participants seeking information for assistance and awareness. And, although the federal government sequestering did impact the event, it was an overall tremendous success.

The Sheriff’s Office credits the concepts of National Night Out, communities fighting crime in the community, as having a significant impact on the crime prevention efforts that have been taking place over the years. The year of 2011 marked the lowest community crime rates since the current methods of tracking crime began in 1994; and, this year Carson City is perched to see the most significant drop in our crime rate falling over 10% below the 2011 rate. While we recognize here that the police do a tremendous job at fighting crime, strong partnerships throughout the community create even greater progress.

Sheriff Ken Furlong would like to thank all of the great sponsors, participants, agencies and visitors who have contributed to Carson City being included in the “best of the best” at fighting back against crime. A special thanks goes out to Deputy Lisa Davis at the Sheriff’s Office for orchestrating National Night Out.
