A Lyon County sheriff's deputy is recovering after being shot and wounded in the hand Thursday night as he investigated a vehicle outside a Silver Springs casino that was involved in a Sparks carjacking earlier in the evening. A suspect involved died.
The deputy was treated for a gunshot wound to his left hand and is expected to recover within six weeks and should be released from the hospital this morning, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. Two suspects were also struck by gunfire in the incident that happened at around 10 p.m. One died and the other was flown by Care Flight. Two other suspects were detained, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
At around 8:30 p.m., Sparks Police reported that a red Chevy Cruze had been carjacked with four suspects.
Lyon County Sheriff Al McNeil said when a deputy approached the vehicle to make contact with the suspects, one suspect opened fire. The officer was hit by gunfire while approaching the vehicle and the deputy returned fire.
The Nevada Department of Investigations is handling the investigation into the incident.
In accordance with Sheriff's Office policy, the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
