Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says an 18-month old boy isn't expected to live after authorities were called Saturday about injuries the child had sustained.
The case is under investigation. The father of the child and the girlfriend of the father who was taking care of the child are cooperating with the investigation, Furlong said.
Carson City authorities were called to an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Long Street at 5:27 p.m. Saturday where the caller said a baby was in distress, bleeding but not conscious, Furlong said. The baby was taken to Carson Tahoe Hospital and transported to Renown Medical Center.
Because the child is on life support and not expected to live, an autopsy would determine the cause of death, Furlong said.
The child has reportedly been to the hospital on two other occasions, Furlong confirmed. He said he cannot confirm whether Child Protective Services were contacted in those prior instances when the child was taken to the hospital.
"I can't confirm that. What I can confirm is CPS is assisting us now," he said.
The baby lived at the home with his father and girlfriend and three children. All were in the process of moving to another apartment. Furlong said the girlfriend was there when the toddler's condition was discovered, calling the father who returned to the home, then calling 911 for help.
