UPDATE 11:09PM: NV Energy reports that power has been restored to nearly all 2,249 customers affected in Monday night's power outage in south Carson City.

Service has been restored to nearly all customers but there's still around 40 customers without power around the Stafford Way and Hickory areas, said NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist. Those 40 customers should be back on line by sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, he said.

While a definitive cause has not been determined, Walquist said there was a fire in an underground vault which tripped a line out of the Curry Street station which is what caused the majority of the outage. NV Energy utility crews were able to isolate the areas and restore most of the service.

UPDATE: NV Energy reports that 2,249 customers in the Carson City area are without power Monday night, between Roop Street and Koontz Lane, south to near Clear Creek and as far north as Industrial Park and 10th Street. The outage was reported at 9:38 p.m. NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist reports the outage may have been caused by equipment failure.

However, first responding firefighters report that a number of transformers between Baker Drive, Gillis Way, Stafford and Sonoma were blown and smoking. Walquist could not confirm this information.

Carson City Fire Department and the Carson City Sheriff's Office are responding Monday night to a number of transformers that are reportedly smoking and blown out in the area of Baker Drive between Gillis Way, Stafford and Sonoma.

The blown transformers have caused an abundance of smoke in the area, with damage to a number of them, first responding Carson City firefighters report. There's been no reports of arcing lines or flames. Due to the number of blown transformers, the likelihood is that the power will be out for several hours, according to firefighters via dispatch.

The power is reportedly out all the way to Fairview and Stewart streets. Dispatch began receiving calls at around 9:35 p.m. Monday night regarding smoking transformers.

Firefighters are investigating, NV Energy has been contacted and the Nevada Highway Patrol has been notified. It is unclear how many transformers are out or what may have caused the transformers to blow. Winds in Carson City have been been calm, according to CarsonWeather.com.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies are directing traffic in the areas where there are signals out.
