The Carson City Sheriff's Office has partnered with Project ChildSafe to offer free gun locks now through the foreseeable future.

The program was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Project ChildSafe program is designed to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearms owners through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits. The kits include a cable-style gun-locking device and a brochure that discusses safe handling and storage practices.

The Sheriff’s Office front counter has gun locks available for free pick up during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Sheriff's Office is located at 911 East Musser Street. The Sheriff's Office encourages safe gun storage and transport and that's why it is providing these gun locks at no cost.

The Sheriffs’ Office will also be providing a gun lock with every Concealed Weapons Permit as a way of getting as many gun locks as possible out and into the community.

Project ChildSafe operates in cooperation with law enforcement departments that provides the firearm safety kits free of charge to gun owners. Since 2003, Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 35 million safety kits to gun owners in all 50 states and in the five U.S. territories.
