Community members are invited to a series of Citizens Academy classes offered through the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. The next series of classes will begin July 13 and there are open seats available, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The informative academy explains what the Sheriff’s Office does and how they do it. It also is designed to inform citizens about the important role community policing plays around Carson City.

Each class will start with question and answer periods by Sheriff Furlong and Undersheriff Steve Albertsen. Each department of the sheriff’s office will be doing a class. There will be speakers and representatives from the sheriff’s office patrol unit, crime lab, evidence, investigations, coroner’s office, civil and records, DUI/traffic, a division that oversees crimes against the elderly, the K-9 unit, plus Nevada Highway Patrol.

Tours include the Carson City Detention Center, the 911 Communications Center and participants will see a SWAT team demonstration.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host the Citizens Academy from July 13 to Sept. 21. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Ormsby Room at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Some classes may be held at off-site locations.

The Academy is open to adults 18 years of age and older with a preference given to Carson City residents, local merchants and their employees and senior citizens. There is not a fee for the class, which does fill up. The deadline for completed applications is Friday, July 8 at 5 p.m.
