On December 3, 2013, the Sheriff's Office recognized its outstanding performers for the year. Each received a plaque and cash award for their contributions to the department and the community:

Deputy Sheriff of the Year:
Deputy Sheriff Sam Hatley, not pictured, received the honors as Deputy of the year. His long running career and leadership have earned him this title.

Sam has served assignments in Detention, Patrol, Gangs, Special Enforcement, Tri-Net Narcotics Task Force, and is slated to be assigned to the Tri-County Gang Unit in January 2014. Of his most notable attributes, he is best known for his willingness to assist others, dynamic thought processes, and ability to analyze cause and effect of complicated operational events.

Sam is most deserving of this award, and shared lunch with his wife as his accomplishments were recognized at the Atlantis Casino by the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) partners.

Volunteer of the Year:
Reserve Commander Tom Crawford received the honors as civilian of the year. Tom commands the Sheriff’s Office Uniformed Reserves and is most known for his eager support to every community event and department operation year round.

His unit stands ready, trained and experienced on a daily basis. Whether the operations call for support on the beaches of Lake Tahoe, the pine nut range, at a community celebration, or tragedy, Tom stands with his men and women up front. While he has been offered a paid staff job repeatedly over the years, Commander Crawford prefers his role as a volunteer; a role that has saved the community in dollars and enhances public safety all year round.

Supervisor of the Year:
This year’s supervisor award was received by Sgt. Scott McDaniel. A Watch Commander/Supervisor of the evening hours patrol division, Scott is continuously attentive to the needs of the community and the officers patrolling the streets.

In addition, he has managed department programs that have links to statewide operations and is currently managing the community traffic management unit. His steady performance, care for his staff, and eager enthusiasm to keep the community informed through press releases, earn him well the title of Supervisor of the Year.

Civilian of the Year (not pictured):
Mr. Don Quilici earned the title of civilian of the year for his relentless oversight of the Detention Center Inmate Work Program. Don arrives at the jail early in the morning to pick up his crew of up to four inmates and begin work details throughout the community.

They can be witnessed removing graffiti, cleaning streets, taking on parks and recreation projects, and even contributing to civic organizations in their ventures. Don never works for the money, but instead contributes his talents because it creates a safer and more beautiful community.

To his credit, the work crews coming out of the jail have an opportunity to pay back to the community under the supervision of a man who is professional, respectful, and has a never ending desire to take on more projects.

Team of the Year:
The Sheriff’s Office Range crew received recognition as the Team of the Year for their contributions to insure each employee equipped with a firearm receives the highest levels of training efficiency possible. The team arrives at the range early, rain or shine, and prepares a number of real scenario obstacles for the officers to complete.

One by one, Deputies are placed on the range, instructed, perform, and are then critiqued for continuous improvement.

A critical task of law enforcement, the range officials are the best of the best. The team consists of Captain Clay Wall, Deputy Richard Pope, Deputy Thomas Miller, Deputy Kip Lee, and Reserve Mounted Unit Commander Joe Bruno. Congratulations to the Range Team.

Congratulations to our Top Picks for 2013.
