On August 15, 2015, Carson City Deputy Sheriff Carl Howell was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call.

On Dec. 8, the Nevada Department of Transportation will ceremonially dedicate the approximately nine-mile Carson City Freeway in the deputy’s name. The freeway, known as Interstate 580, U.S. 395 and, in southern end, U.S. 50, currently extends from Lakeview Hill in north Carson City to Fairview Drive. When constructed in 2017, the last leg of the freeway will extend to the U.S. 50 Spooner Junction in south Carson City, with the entire stretch named in honor of Deputy Howell.

One sign has been placed in each direction of interstate near the East Fifth Street bridge over the freeway. The nine and a half by six-foot signs read “Carson City Deputy Sheriff Carl Howell Memorial Frwy.” Future signs are also planned for the northern and southern ends of the freeway.

There are five other state roads officially named in honor of an individual, not including U.S. presidents.

The Tuesday afternoon ceremony is intended for family and Carson City law enforcement partners.
