Carson City Sheriff deputies, wearing yellow t-shirts declaring "Say No to Cuts for Cops," have packed the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center for the Board of Supervisors meeting, waiting to hear the fate of 20 positions in the department.
Sheriff Kenny Furlong told supervisors that the loss of up to 20 positions is "a reality" and he has done everything in his power to save as many jobs as he can.
However, the Deputy's Association, which represents 77 employees, said they have foregone a 3 precent raise and are willing to negotiate salary reductions to save jobs.
Don Gibson, president of the Deputy's Association, said "We have tentatively agreed to a pay freeze. The last thing we want to see is any member of the law enforcement community lose their job. We are willing to go to any length so that deputy sheriffs don't lose their jobs."
Supervisor Pete Livermore said he would like the bargaining units to meet with the city on further cuts the union said it is willing to make.
The supervisors have not taken a vote yet on the $7.9 million in cuts that needs to be made today.
