A back to school bash Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada turned out to be a big end-of-summer safety splash for its members.
With the last-minute cancelation of Carson City’s National Night Out because of recent heavy rain saturating Mills Park, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office took some of the donations for the event and turned them loose for the hundreds of kids at the Russell Way club.
Deputies, detectives, sergeants, captains and officers from motor patrol were also on hand, as was Sheriff Ken Furlong and Undersheriff Steve Albertsen, who cooked hotdogs supplied by Grocery Outlet while music for the bash was donated by DJ Dan Kimm of Rock-It Productions.
There were plenty of games and demonstrations, all with public safety in mind as children prepare their return to school Monday, Aug. 18. The event was organized by DARE Officer Lisa Davis, Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff’s Support Specialist Marie Martensen. Also included were support staff from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
Meanwhile, the adults will get their turn for a bash Sunday, Sept. 7 at the World’s Greatest Luau and Kids’ Auction, 3 to 7 p.m. at the Pony Express Pavilion at Mills Park.
The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. Raffle prizes include a trip to Hawaii and a 2013 Toyota Tacoma truck courtesy of Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers. Raffle tickets for the truck are $20.
Tickets for the Sept. 7 fundraiser are $100 per person and includes and all-you-can-eat Hawaiian style barbecue and all the fixings. Corporate and local business tables are encouraged. For tickets call (775) 882-8820.
