The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Paul McGrath, who served eight years as Sheriff of Carson City (1987-1995). The principal topic of his remarks will be the reasons for his implacable opposition to the legal marijuana trade.
McGrath moved to Nevada in 1955 and married his wife Darlene in 1961. They had four children, two boys and two girls, three of whom pursued careers in public safety. With their children and grandchildren, Paul and Darlene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2021.
Paul graduated from Carson High School in 1959. He joined the Marines, and after discharge in 1963 he studied at UNR, UNLV, UCLA and other colleges while staying in federal service as a police officer and criminal Investigator with Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In 1969 McGrath became the first sheriff's deputy to be hired by the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City. In 1970 he signed on as a trooper with the Nevada Highway Patrol, where he rose through the ranks and left as a Captain in 1987.
In November 1986 McGrath was elected the 24th sheriff of Carson City / Ormsby County, where he served until 1995. He was then taken on as Executive Director of the Western States Sheriffs' Association, where he provided assistance and direction to sheriffs and their departments in thirteen western states, addressing Indian Gaming and other state-related issues. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 2008.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, March 21st, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Paul will take the floor after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
