The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be conducting saturation patrols in the Carson City area for the rest of this month. The focus of these patrols will be to reduce crashes by enforcing traffic violations, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Deputies will be looking for drivers who are speeding, using cell phones, tail gaiting or any other violation that may lead to car crashes. Drivers are encouraged to follow the rules of the road and help in reducing crashes which can lead to injury and death.

Meanwhile, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the State, will be participating in Joining Forces through the month of January. The focus of this event will be impaired drivers, said McDaniel.

Grant funding for this event is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. These monies are used to pay for additional deputies who will be out looking for impaired drivers.

Other events that will be held in the future focus on pedestrian safety, seat belt use, distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving. The object of these events is to increase safety on our roadways and reduce crashes which can lead to death and injuries.

The following is from Sgt. McDaniel regarding ongoing efforts to cut down on crosswalk violations.

We have talked about the importance of driver’s looking out for pedestrians in crosswalks and along the roadways. So far this year, the weather has been mild but the nights have still been cold and most pedestrians continue to wear dark colored clothing at night.

It is most important that you as the individual walking the city at night be seen. Visibility is limited during darkened hours and despite most thinking, you do not always have the right of way when crossing the roadway.

Just as we ask motorists to be courteous and allow the pedestrian to reach the other side of the street before continuing down the road, you should give the same courtesy to the driver by being seen at night and ensuring that the driver sees you and is slowing before crossing.

Carry a flashlight or purchase clothing that has reflective material. Many items can be found from orange reflective vests to clip on flashing and steady lights that will help you to be seen. Working together, we can reduce the number of vehicle versus pedestrian crashes this year.
