No, I can't dance, but you can come watch and laugh as I try tomorrow night at the “Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance” event at the Carson Nugget.

The event is put on by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club, and involves getting some local "celebrities" to compete in a mini "Dancing with the Stars"-style contest. If you are the betting type, I'd put my money on Sheriff Kenny Furlong to win.

I used to work with one of the people in the dance club, and she asked me to participate. For some reason, on that day my ability to say "no" was broken, so for the past couple of weeks I've been attempting to learn how to do the salsa.

My instructor Tiffany Hopkins at Yaple's Ballroom Dance studio in downtown Carson City has been very patient with me, and the fact that I haven't broken any of her toes is a testament to how good of an instructor she is.

The no-host bar opens at 6, which is where you will find me while I prepare for the competition that begins as 6:30. Dinner follows the competition. After that, everyone is invited to hit the dance floor for more fun.

The tickets are $32, which is a good deal for dinner, dancing and comedic fun. For more information or to reserve a will-call ticket, go to http://www.highsierrasdc.org or call 530-544-8745, 775-225-6437 or 775-629-9369. No tickets will be sold at the door.
