The Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a man posing as a lieutenant who is telling them that they will go to jail unless they use a credit card or money order to pay for traffic tickets.
According Sgt. Scott McDaniel, a man is calling homeowners identifying himself as "Lt. Steven Mills" with the Carson City Sheriff's Office or the Ormsby County Sheriff's Office.
"He has been telling people they have bench warrants for their arrest due to speeding tickets that were captured by a traffic camera. The sheriff's office does not use traffic cameras and the sheriff's office does not make phone calls to individuals to collect money for traffic warrants."
McDaniel said there has had eight reports of this scam thus far, one on Friday and seven thus far Saturday. In one case, a victim was taken for $500.
"He tries to get them to give a credit card number or a money order, telling them that if they don't pay he will come to their home and arrest them," said McDaniel. "People should not give anyone any personal information over the phone," said McDaniel.
If you have received a similar phone call, report it to Carson City Dispatch at (775) 887-2011.
